Kristen, the founder and stylist behind Cloth and Curate, has a mission: empower women to become the best version of themselves through fashion. She works towards this goal in a few ways. Kristen is a personal stylist. She’ll work with you to help clean out your closet and organize what you already have. Next she can shop for you. Kristen carries beautiful clothing and it’s right in her home! She also works with brands such as Stuart Weitzman and Veronica Beard to find exactly what you’re looking for.
Today I’m sharing some of the clothing Kristen sells as well as a bit about Kristen herself! Enjoy!
Do you have a background in fashion?
I went to Marist College and my major was fashion design. I draped fabric on a form to create patterns and sewed an entire collection to go down a runway. Then after, I worked in the fashion industry in NYC for just under a decade. I worked for Betsey Johnson, BCBG, Tuleh and a luxury London Fog brand.
What do you enjoy most about being a personal stylist? What’s the hardest part?
I enjoy making women realize that they have a spark hidden that wants to explode. After working with a client that is perhaps not confident or doesn’t have a sense of style they leave with knowledge and a sense of style. They leave wanting to express themselves through clothing when just before our sessions they wanted to hide. It brings happiness to my heart. The hardest part is when a client doesn’t see their inner beauty/potential.
How did you get started selling clothes? Which came first being a personal stylist or the retail aspect of Cloth and Curate or did they occur simultaneously?
I would say styling came first as I styled my friends and family since I was young. However, when I started my business both the retail and the styling occured simultaneously!
What do you look for when ordering clothes?
The most important thing I look for when ordering clothing is that they speak to me. However, I know how to buy for others, not just myself. I try to order something for everyone so I incorporate edgy, preppy, neutral, casual, fancy, colorful, bold, minimal. I make sure to have something for everyone and every season when you come shop Cloth and Curate there is no doubt I will cover ALL of your needs.
Do you stay with the same designers or try different ones?
I stay loyal to my current designers but I try to add a few seasonally to keep fresh and current.
What is a day like for you?
A day for me starts getting my 3 boys ready for school. Luke, my eldest, goes to private school and his bus comes at 7:00 am so I am up with him at 6:00 getting him ready for his bus. At 7:00 when he leaves I get the other two up and get them off so I am in perpetual motion from 6:00-8:00 am everyday. Then I grab my coffee and my laptop and start work. I take a break at 10:30 to hit the gym then set up my appointments (clients) for the afternoons. Then after the kids come home I am taking care of them or in more appointments!
If I were to sell clothes I’d want to keep everything I sell. Are you like that? If you are, how do you keep from doing so?
I always say my collection is like my 4th child. It truly is like a work of art to me and I find myself very attached to it so that’s why selling my clothing to wonderful clients means they’ve found a happy home and a purpose. Again it makes my heart smile. Of course I would love to keep everything but then I wouldn’t have a company anymore- ha! When I go to market and place orders I add an extra unit in my size in a few pieces so I have something to look forward to myself. So I do buy a few pieces every season but I don’t go nuts- I try to discipline myself and focus on the perfect client for each style.
Besides your online website, where else do you sell your clothes?
My biggest point of sales is when I do pop ups (so in person)! I pop up all over Westchester – at events, country clubs, restaurants, etc. I also pop up at my house and women come to me here as if I am a boutique. Other than pop ups and my website another huge point of sale is off social media. I post a new look everyday and people message me and I simply drop or ship the item same day.
Working with Kristen can help you see what you already own and then shop her boutique to fill in what you need. If she doesn’t have it at her boutique, she’ll find it for you! Kristen will help you bring your vision of yourself to life and if you’re not sure what that is, she’ll help you to figure it out!

The hardest part for me is NOT to wear the same things repeatedly and instead combine some of my clothes. Good ideas!

Heike, I think we often find ourselves doing that-wearing things on repeat. I try to go into my closet and find something I haven’t worn recently and put that on. It’s fun and makes getting dresses more exciting to me!! Kristen can definitely help put outfits together from what you have! Thanks for reading. xo, Michele
