When my husband and I travel we love to find local designers and see the unique clothing and accessories they create. Since I moved back to New York, I love finding designers here in the city. When I came across Dear Finelli, I knew I had to share Lauren and her beautiful bags.
How did you begin creating bags?
It all started when I began taking Saturday live classes at FIT for high school students in the late 90s. I took a handbag pattern making class and fell in love with designing bags. I knew instantly that this is what I want to do for my career.
What is your background and how did you learn the techniques/skills to make your bags?
I’m a footwear designer by day and this is my side passion project that I hope to one day pursue full time.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I’m inspired by all the strong women in my life. Each style is named after a woman in my life that has inspired me by their style and personality.
Where do you get the materials used in creating your bags?
I search local markets for my materials right here in NYC.
Do you have a favorite material to work with?
I love denim and animal prints.
Do you have a favorite piece you’ve created?
My favorite style is the WINTER box bag, it’s a unique oval shape and truly one of a kind.
What does a day look like for you as a designer?
I’ll start my day by hand sketching some ideas. Then once I have the sketches down, I’ll start playing around with materials. Picking the materials is always the fun part. Then I’ll work with my sample developer to discuss how I’d like the sample to look.
In between creating, I’ll do trend research either online or by shopping stores like Bergdorf’s to see what’s being sold at retail.
