So by now you know that I’m not really going anywhere during the pandemic, but I’m still looking for something fun to do. Fun where I feel safe and can socially distance. Well, Getaway House was the perfect place for my daughter and I to do just this.
We drove a little over 1 1/2 hour to Lisbon, Ohio for Getaway Beaver Creek. Similar to hotels, check in was not until the afternoon, so my daughter and I decided to hike one of the trails we found on the Getaway website. Located about 10 minutes from the Getaway Outpost, Hellbender Bluff Trail was a pretty, easy hike a little over 3 miles long and a great start to our trip.
We then headed to the Outpost, home away from home for the next few days. I loved that we were able to check in and out without having to interact with anyone in person; they emailed us our door code and we were in! The cabins are 50-150 feet apart from one another, making it perfect for social distancing and privacy, without feeing too isolated in the woods (my imagination would take over if we were too isolated!) From the outside, the pod looks like a little shipping container, but inside it’s cute and cozy, and very clean! Given the current pandemic, we asked them to remove the bedding and we brought our own sheets, pillows, and blankets.
After we settled in we decided to go for another hike. Mineral Springs Loop Trail was about 30 minutes from the Getaway House located in Pennsylvania. Well, my knowledge of geography is so poor that I had no idea we’d be driving through W. Virginia to get to Pennsylvania. Learn something new every day!! This was a short hike, just a little over a mile, and was really pretty. We came upon a waterfall on this trail, while it was just a trickle, there was a really cool cave right next to it that made it worth the hike! There were a few other trails right next to the one we did, but we were ready to get back for dinner! ?
We got back to the Outpost and were so hungry-as usual!. While there are restaurants and a vineyard nearby, we decided to bring our own food with us, including this chickpea salad that we have been obsessed with in our house! There was a mini fridge which was the perfect size for all of our food and snacks. We sat outside at the picnic table, ate dinner, drank champagne, played cards-something we love to do together, and laughed-a lot! My daughter had a blast making a fire in the fire pit (which doubles as a grill) and we made s’mores with ingredients courtesy of the Getaway House. It was so much fun and so relaxing, the perfect way to end a wonderful day.
We had a great night’s sleep although my daughter was disappointed she did not see a bear out the wall size window next to the bed! ?
We headed out to explore and this time went to Beaver Creek State Park, a 10 minute drive from the Outpost. At the entrance to the park was Pioneer Village. Although it was closed due to Covid, we were still able to walk around and peek into the windows to get a glimpse of life in the 1800s. Then we walked parts of the Dogwood and Vondergreen Trails. These trails were just so beautiful and untouched. We started back to our car as the clouds looked threatening and as soon as we closed the car doors the first drops fell-talk about timing! We went back to the Outpost, ate lunch, and took a nap. That night was a repeat of the previous night-sitting outside building a fire, playing cards, making s’mores, drinking champagne, and laughing so hard with my daughter-a memory I will hold dear to my heart.
The next morning we headed home stopping at White House Fruit Farm. Since it wasn’t open for berry picking we walked around the beautiful grounds for a bit and then went into their market, where we bought some goodies to bring home.
This was a quick trip, but the tiny house was perfect for us. We had a great time hiking, reading, playing games, and laughing. The change of scenery and beautiful hikes were good for us, both physically and mentally. I strongly recommend one of their 11 locations for a relaxing vacation in these crazy times. It’s perfect now, during the summer, and will also be beautiful in the fall as the leaves change and in the winter with beautiful snow fall-yes, the pods have heat and air conditioning. Also, every time you book a getaway cabin, they make a donation to Feeding America-win win!
