To me it’s so important to support small businesses, especially when they are Black, female owned businesses. When I come across fabulous businesses that I can share with you all, well, I get so excited I just can’t wait until the post goes live! That’s exactly how I felt when I came across Joanah Black. Tell me about your company

Joanah Black is a fashion & beauty brand owned by Nigerian legal practitioner cum designer, Dara Duntoye, who is determined to bring out the inner goddess in every woman, be it whilst they are casually adorned or dressing it up and also of the opinion a woman isn’t only what she eats or wears but what she puts on her skin!

Headquartered in Lagos, Africa’s fashion hub, the JB brand utilizes the best of both African and Western materials to create graceful and sensually inspired designs in clothing .

When did you start designing clothing?  

From as early as I could remember .. My mother is fashionable, I believe I got it from her. Lol 

How did you learn the necessary skills? 

It’s always been a passion for me, I watched lots of videos and fashion shows.

What made you decide to start your business?

lol, people would always admire what I wore and would be shocked when they heard I made it. Friends also encouraged me to share my designs with others out there.

Your designs are so beautiful, where do you get your inspiration?

Inspirations come from everywhere. I could have a mental image and quickly sketch it out, it could be from watching a movie seeing a neckline that I could improve on. Seeing a fabric and knowing just what to do with it. It could be looking at flowers, colours, etc. The little things really.

Where do you purchase your materials?

Fabrics are from Nigeria, Turkey and US

What is a day like for you?

Super busy as I have to combine working with designing then sewing.

What is your favorite part of owning your business?

Favorite part is seeing my creations on women and just seeing the confidence and elegance they exude.

What is the hardest part?

Combining work and my passion

Do you have a favorite piece you’ve designed?

Every design is special and inspired via different ways… I wouldn’t say I have a favorite. They all are and I feel very proud when I see them being born just as I’d imagined or even better. Lol.

What is the meaning behind the name of your business?

Joanah is my English name and Black connotes my roots, hence the brand name Joanah Black.

I know you sell online, do you have a storefront as well? Do you sell your designs anywhere else?

We have a store front in Nigeria but sell online via IG to our clients all over the world. Yes, we have clients in the US, Nigeria, UK, Germany, Russia etc etc

The beautiful thing about Joanah Black clothes is that as incredible as the outfits are when worn as a coordinated set, there are so many ways to wear them as separates. I’ll pair the duster with a pair of jeans, blue or white, and wear the matching pants with a white t shirt. The pussy bow top will look gorgeous with a skirt, solid trousers, and of course jeans. The matching pants can go from season to season-a tank top or tee in warmer weather and as it gets cold a pullover sweater or a cardigan over the entire outfit. Don’t get me started on this maxi duster. I love it over a dress, as shown, but think of it over jeans, pants, a skirt-the options are endless.
