Being bored, I’d always thought it might be interesting to serve on a jury. However, I’d never been called-not once in 57 years! This changed a few months ago when I received a summons to appear in Municipal Court for jury duty. Well, I wasn’t as excited as I thought I would be. My first thoughts were: well, not this week, I’m going to visit my daughter, and not the following week because if it goes long it runs in to when my mom will be visiting. I finally figured out when I was available and when I called they were extremely accommodating, much to my pleasant surprise.
On a Monday morning my husband drove me downtown to start my “sentence”. I wasn’t sure where I was going so he said he would drive me and pick me up the first day (he ended up doing this every day-such a sweetheart!) I signed in and sat down to wait. I brought a book with me and, for those who have never served jury duty, they had magazines, games, puzzles, books, a tv-everything one could want, except for the comfort of our own home! A few hours later I was called as a prospective juror along with 21 others. We listened to the lawyers, the judge, and before lunchtime I was juror number 3. After an hour and a half lunch break, during which time I walked around downtown Cleveland and actually ran in to my oldest-what a special treat, I was back in seat number 3. The afternoon was pretty much a lot of waiting (yeah, I was kinda bored, but also excited to start the trial!) Finally, the judge let us know the defendant had accepted a plea bargain and we were let go for the afternoon. The next morning I was back in the jury pool room. I was eventually called again. This time I was released almost immediately and so back to the jury room I went and waited. I talked to some nice people, but this bored housewife was bored! After sitting in the jury pool room for the entire third day I was dismissed saying I had served my time!
I was a little disappointed that I didn’t actually get to serve as a juror and observe a trial in action, but overall I was glad to be done. I can be just as bored in the comfort of my own home, right??!! Well, fast forward two months later when I receive a jury summons to serve in my local municipal court. Really? So soon? I called to explain that I had just served for the city and got a “Honey, that has nothing to do with us” response. They must know I’m a bored housewife looking for something to do!
Update: A few days before I was scheduled to start, I received a letter in the mail saying the cases had been cancelled and there was no need for me to come in. Since I had reserved my time this satisfied my duties for two years. Ok, so now what do I do for the next week??!!
