Welcome to my first monthly review of different things that entertained me (aka kept me from being a very bored housewife!) Hope you enjoy reading about them and trying some of them yourself!
The Selection Series by Kiera Cass: My youngest daughter recently decided she likes reading again and she goes through books faster than I could imagine. She recommended these books and told me the reviews said this YA series is “The Hunger Games meets The Bachelor.” This series would make for a great beach read (or couch read if you’re like me.)
Volunteering: I had the opportunity to volunteer with some incredible individuals who are about to age out of foster care. We were working on self esteem, long and short term goal setting, and networking and job interview skills. As often happens, I leave feeling so humbled. These young adults have so much to offer despite some of the tough situations they’ve encountered in their lives. If you have any time, find some place to volunteer, even for an hour. I’m never bored when I’m volunteering and I always leave feeling as though I’ve learned something new.
A Star is Born: I finally watched the newest version of this movie and could listen to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper forever. While the story is sad, the music is just incredible. I’d seen the 1976 movie with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson years ago and just got the DVD of the 1954 version with Judy Garland and James Mason and can’t wait to watch it. Has anyone seen the original 1937 movie with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March? I can’t believe how many times this movie has been remade, but it’s never boring to rewatch!
Hidden Crystal Candle from Uncommon Goods: I gave this candle as a gift because I love the idea that once you burn the candle you have the healing powers of the crystal, plus I just love candles. They offer three different candles with crystals for either healing, love, or good luck and can’t we all use a bit of these at some point in our lives.
Archive Rosehips & Lavender Calming Lotion: I was attending my son’s college graduation from Denison University in Granville, Ohio (great school by the way!) and we stayed at the Buxton Inn, a cute, haunted hotel. Side note: My daughters didn’t know that the hotel was haunted because a couple of them might not have been too keen on staying there-ridiculous, I know ?. In the morning my oldest daughter came down and immediately started telling us about the weirdest dream she had. She was lying in her bed and looked up and saw two ghosts (who looked like Casper the friendly ghost) engaging in some amorous activity. Hmmmm. Anyway, this was the lotion they supplied as part of their amenities and once I tried it I was hooked. I don’t know if someone wore a scent like this when I was younger, but whenever I put it on it just makes me happy. Luckily, I was able to order more online. Happy sigh
Mario Badescu Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater Facial Spray: I love anything rose scented and this hydrating facial mist is pure perfection. I use it before I apply moisturizer, after removing my makeup, and anytime during the day I feel like I just want to smell something rose scented.
Hu Kitchen Chocolate Covered Almonds & Sea Salt: My daughter introduced me to Hu Kitchen and their healthier for you snacks. The other day while at a local store I came upon a display of their products and was beyond happy. I immediately grabbed a bag of the chocolate covered almonds, along with a few other goodies, and before I was even out of the parking lot I dug into the bag. Given that these are gluten free, dairy free, vegan, no refined or cane sugar, you get the idea, I’m happy to have a snack I don’t have to feel guilty about when I indulge (aka eat the whole bag in one sitting.).
What didn’t bore you this past month?
