The other day I talked about how a great coat can elevate an outfit and your mood. Well, the coats from Philine of San Francisco will bring your outfit to the most incredible heights and make you feel beyond glamorous. They are that beautiful!
Philine, the designer of these stunning coats, has a unique vision and is a believer of slow fashion. She has traveled the world and you can see that influence in her designs.
How did you get started in the business of designing coats? How long have you been doing so?
I’ve been a Designer in the garment business for a long time, (since I was 19 and moved to New York). I’ve worked in many areas of the business, the last few years in high end yoga wear and casual wear then moving to workout wear being sold at Target and other big box stores. After leaving my last job I was freelancing for Blue Canoe in San Francisco and working for Nordstrom part time as a tailor and fitter, mostly in men’s clothing, suits. I was excited by the men’s jackets and the different linings some of the lines used and wanted to create something of my own passion, something that could help empower people to stand out and have the courage to be their authentic selves. I thought about my mom and how she gained the courage from that coat she wore when she immigrated to this country as a poor young woman looking for a better life. (Read more about Philine’s mom here) This is how I chose to make coats and why I am inspired by all the immigrants who come to America and make it what it is today.
How would you describe your brand?
My brand is fun and luxurious and stands out from the status quo.
What is your personal style?
I like to dress up and wear fun jewelry and put the unexpected together. I would say my style is unique.
What are your favorite materials to work with?
I love to work with leftover designer fabrics from Europe, fun furs and silky linings in fun prints.
Do you have a favorite coat you’ve designed and if so, why is it your favorite?
Probably my Paris coat in all colors.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Always different depending on what’s going on. I check my social media, work on upcoming orders, ship out orders, take pictures and videos, cut coats or scarves, deliver cuts to sewers, just a lot of things. I also make sure I get in my yoga, freelance job and some tailoring at Nordstrom. Oh and of course talk to my two daughters and take care of my 92 year old Mom.
Aside from your online site, where can one purchase your incredible coats, stoles, and scarves?
The best place right now is in San Francisco at “Love on Haight!”
Is there anything you’d like to share?
This is my dream and I’m doing it finally, after working in the Fashion Industry my whole life, I’m doing really what I want and although it can be very tough, when I look at my coats hanging here on my rack I know I’m proud of what I’m doing.
And I’m so happy you’re following your dream! When I put on these coats I feel like I’m living in a time when everyone always got dressed up and that’s an era I’d love to live in. It’s like playing dress up in the most fabulous coats!
