One of the things I’ve missed the most this past year (besides seeing my kids, family, and friends) is traveling. Usually my husband and I are gone for a part of almost every month, whether it’s a quick trip to New York or a bigger trip overseas. My kids once asked me when the last time I spent an entire month home was (they asked this prior to the pandemic) and I think there was one month in a year that we were home for the entire month. But this is what we love to do and so not being able to travel has been a frustration for us.
I had watched Emily in Paris and then read a number of books based in Paris and it was fun to think about and visualize the places they mentioned that I’d been to. So my husband and I decided to travel through movies. A few times a week, we’ll pick a destination and then look for movies that take place there. Sometimes the movies aren’t great, but it’s still fun to see the scenery and remember our experiences in those locations. Some of these movies I’d seen years ago, but it’s fun to watch them again, this time with a different eye.
With that in mind, I’d like to invite you to travel with us through the movies to one of our favorite places: New York City!
- It Happened On 5th Avenue
- When Harry Met Sally
- Home Alone 2
- Serpico
- Fatal Attraction
- Kramer Vs Kramer
- Wall Street
- Manhattan
- King Of New York
- Rear Window
- Dial M For Murder
- North By NorthWest
- Sabrina
- An Affair to Remember
- All About Eve
- Desperately Seeking Susan
- That Touch of Mink
- The Great Gatsby (2013)
- Wolf of Wall Street
I’m not sure where we’re off to next (in our movies!), but if you have any suggestions, please share!

I love this idea of traveling through movies!
It is not unusual when my husband and I are watching a movie or TV show to say, “We were there…remember that.”
I think the reconnection of places through movies and books is one of the many gifts of travel.

Hi Rosemary, I so agree! It definitely make a movie or book more meaningful if you’ve been to that location. And brings back your own memories of wonderful trips! xo, Michele
What we do is watch on YouTube, Walks around the world . And then type your destination. It’s a great way to be back for a few moments!
Nancy, What a fun idea! It sounds like it would be fun to do the “remember when” as you take a virtual walk! Thanks. xo, Michele
Love the Hitchcock’s you mentioned and Edith Head was his go to costume designer!
Hitchcock’s movies are incredible. I love how he put himself in them in some small part-it’s fun to be the first one to spot him! I also love the costumes/clothes from the older movies. I definitely would have loved to wear them! Thanks for reading Gai! xo, Michele
What a great idea, Nancy! I love the idea of watching movies based on location. Thank you for the list of New York movies. I’ve taken a screenshot to remind me!!
Thanks Barbie! Let me know which you watch and what you think! xo, Michele
Michele,

Whenever I watch movies of that feature places I have been I am always looking for sights I have seen.
I also love seeing places in movies that I would like to travel to one day soon!
Thanks Robin! It’s so much fun-traveling through movies and revisiting old travels. What are some of your favorite movies to travel through? Thanks for reading! xo, Michele
